Please don't share it outside Evangelists' Corner Café, this version is only for you, our evangelists.
We would like to know your opinion first :-) The public beta will be available during next week (together with other avast! editions).
avast! Free version 8 contains the following new major features:

- UI sometimes hangs while browsing
- Voting and WebRep search coloring sometimes does not work in browsers
- There might be issues with connection while using remote assistance
- Browser Cleanup component has v7 facelift
- Except English, there are many translation issues
Download location:
It should be possible to install this version on top of your existing avast! installation (all settings
should be preserved).
Any feedback is appreciated, please use our new https://feedback.avast.com (click 'Login', then
'Single Sign-On' and you'll be logged in automagically if you are already logged in the forum or you'll

[1] Release plan
Tech wrote here it's not important for him, so please skip this section . Others can expect A8 beta
during end of December (~ same date as was for A7). Final version must be released before the end
of Feb 2013 (~ same date as for A7). Usually, there are a lot of PR/Marketing/Web work so final
release date should be quite fixed. Since we're going to introduce several new components, beta
testing phase should be much longer (~2 months) than in past.
[2] Beta testing feedback
During last beta testing, we start collecting so called support packages from all our beta users (the
same support package you can generate from Maintenance tab). It contains list of installed avast
files/avast configuration and crash logs. We were interested only in crash logs, because we wanted
to fix as much bugs as possible. We informed about avast beta only on this forum, so I was quite
surprised we received statistics from ~30k unique users (I expected hardly ~1k). I created a tool
which analyzed users' logs (~500k I guess) and it helped us to fix top crashes in many avast
components. This is the way how we're going to test A8 beta as well. In A8, we added a new feature
to analyze user's dumps at client's side and send results directly to avast (so we can see problems in
production code when beta testing is over). We'll see if this feature is efficient.

[3] Automatic license activation (for e-store)
If avast was installed and you renew your license in e-store, now you'll be able to apply immediately the license by one click from the webbrowser. Now you had to save it to disk, open UI, go to Maintenance/Subscription - and find your license on disk. Quite a lot of steps for average users. I heard there were several complains about complexity, that's why we improved the license processing. It wasn't easy to implement from the technical view: webshield monitors your traffic/URL/DNS entries, when it'll recognize a specific URL from our e-store, it'll schedule a task which will download automatically your license and use it. You can always skip this step and save the license to disk, backup or move it on different computer. No changes in free registration process. You can object, some features (like this) may be useless to implement, but their technical background (from the developer's view) are just cool, so that's why we tried to implement it.
[4] Global exclusions
Applied for all shields, filepath locations and URL addresses. Wildcard support. Processes cannot be still excluded from scanning (I don't think it's really required, it'd be another empty sub-page in main settings). Was there a forum discussion (with some real cases) when this feature is useful? If it makes sense, I could implement it to A8, but configuration would be probably read from INI (without UI settings).
[5] Firewall changes
You have probably heard we closed a deal with Agnitum company (makers of Outpost firewall) to buy their firewall engine (link) and it was discussed in avast forum (link). A bit of history: several years ago, me and lukor started to develop avast! firewall, later I moved to virtualization area, lukor has finished this product and I love its easy use! It is how it should look something like that also in future versions, right now we're not going to implement any complex settings. Network programming is quite complicated in Windows, firewall must support low-level filtering (based on raw packets), stream filtering (http/ftp/...), new vista+ framework (i.e. merged previous parts together for vista+) and service components. Four different parts, various OSes (from XP to Win8). We have decided to buy outpost's network filtering library to speedup network development in avast products (network/webshield are also separated network drivers). Agnitum library has been already used in avast7 (aswnet.sys) for Win8 network filtering. This OS banned old network technology (TDI) and we'd have to rewrite our drivers. A8 R1 (r1=release no. one) will still use old firewall engine, in A8 R2 (~ 4months after R1) new agnitum filtering platform should be used (i.e. new rules engine, new user-mode processing, etc). HIPS wasn't part of the deal.
[6] Script shield
Firstly it's important to know how SS internally works: when avast detects IE/FF/Chrome/Chromium/Adobe is executing, we inject our SS dll into this process. This DLL tries to find a function in memory which is responsible for script starting. These functions are private, it means they're hidden, not exported outside the library. We need to use special algorithm to locate them in memory. The current avast version uses a lot of static signatures. We had to add support for almost every new FF/Chrome version and before we release it in a new program update, webbrowser is already outdated. I changed the code to use wildcards so the function can be found even if they do minor changes binary files - we released the patch version for 1474 (link) and you can see it started working for FF 16/17/18 beta/19 aurora/20 nightly, IE10, including the latest Chrome dev versions.
[7] Autosandbox improvements
User interface wasn't changed (in fact I didn't have idea how to improve it), only detection rates. As you know, autosandbox executes a suspicious process in the sandbox and logs every filesystem/registry operations, attempts to inject to different processes, modify system components, install hooks, network connections, etc etc. Avast has over 1500 generic signatures in VPS up to this day (their prefixes are Dyna:, as you can see in VPS release history). One signature usually identifies various malwares, so one malware is also usually detected by several signatures (e.g. for disabling windows update/firewall, injection, etc). Autosandbox reports 50 000 Dyna infections every day. Our viruslab analyses ~40k unique malwares every day in autosandbox and collect the logs, running on 180 virtual machines in ramdisk for 24hrs a day. In A7, malware attempts to inject itself into different processes were blocked. In A8, we duplicate & sandbox target's process on different desktop and allow injections, so malware isn't stopped early and we continue monitoring activity from the injection payload. Since we started to analyze a lot of malwares in our viruslab, every machine crash is reported to me & fixed. Autosandbox/sandbox should be therefore quite stable in A8.
[8] Sandbox improvements
I added SCM (services) virtualization, better Win8 support. You can mount sandbox storage as a new volume and copy sandboxed files. Right now I'm testing if sandboxed webbrowser/autosandboxed processes can be running from ramdisk (to add more protection & speedup). This feature should be added in R1 or R2.
[9] SafeZone improvements
In A8, SafeZone creates shortcuts for several pre-defined apps on desktop so users can run them (in sandbox of course) while they're browsing in SafeZone. They are: notepad, calculator, Adobe
Reader, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel (if the apps were not installed on your computer, they're not added on desktop). You can also hide all those icons from desktop. The apps should help users when doing banking/shopping operations (they want to save some notes or calculate something, so that's why I added icons on desktop). You can also add 3rd party app on desktop as well. If the app isn't signed by a trusted authority, you'll be warned SafeZone security can be compromised.

Hi,

the post above is the only message I found via the whole net where it is said that "you can add a 3rd party app on SafeZone Desktop". Please, would you be so kind to tell - HOW? Nobody knows...
